Because they didn’t trust him. He was a republican, and even with the nickname Honest Abe, they thought he was lying. He also revealed that he was against slavery and even said that slavery was american’s enemy. Though many things led up to the war, lincoln’s election was the deciding factor to create the confederate states of america. Had breckinridge won, then the south would not have left and knew for sure that slavery would not be illegalized.
