Artist Finds Inspiration In Painting Dogs
Animal portrait painting is just the same as human portraiture with the exception that animals hate to pose. Capturing the animal’s attention the entire time is a challenge for an artist. This is the field in which a female artist of Wilmington has specialized. It was mostly animals that she drew. At age 10 she had her own exhibit at the local library and at age 12 she was already illustrating children’s books. While it’s true that she does portraits of many different kinds of animals, she mainly places interest on dogs. In order to have photographs for her collection, she makes a request from the owner if she can duplicate photos of the dog that he might have. She determines the colors to use by collecting snips of hair from the dog, one each from its tail, ears and tummy. These snips are kept for each dog’s file. Afterwards, she concerns herself with the pose of the dog and the composition with a suitable background. Selection of composition is determined by the type of dog or animal. For the portrait of a Chesapeake Bay retriever, for instance, she sat in a duck blind doing sketches to obtain the necessary realism.
She thinks that animals, just like humans, can form their own opinions. Being a professional, one American pointer actually snuck up behind one painter and ripped apart her worst painting with his teeth. The painting must have been terrible if the dog did that and had to be given large doses of medication after.
She uses a paw print blended in with scenery and the kennel club’s identifying symbols on the back of portraits featuring beagles or bassets. She has even obtained abstract backgrounds done with the help of her own dog’s paw when he cooperates in painting. But animals frequently do not cooperate.
