Once Hidden In Southern Attics, Confederate War Bonds Seeing Collector Favor

Have you ever seen a Confederate States of America bond?

The CSA was hungry forfunding for its war effort–indeed, for its very life. And so, it resorted to what nations have commonly done in modern days: it sold bonds. These bonds constituted guarantees to pay off, at a later date and with interest, the loan that a citizen or other “investor” had made in the southern cause.

With the South’s defeat, most of those hopeful loans never got repaid, of course, and the certificates languished in attics and trunks for as long as a century or more.

Today, though, those Confederate bonds are prized collector’s items. And, you can turn around and sell Confederate bonds (along with other types of paper items) on eBay for a pretty decent return.

Confederate bonds are lovely when put in a frame and displayed on one’s wall. Quite a few of them could be considered works of art.  And, due to their historical significance, they may serve as the starting point for many a fascinating discussion.

Confederate bond certificates were put out in a variety of dollar amounts. They further differed from one another in terms of the inscriptions and graphic devices they used.

Folks who collect them are fascinated with the vignettes, or illustrations, used on the different Confederate bond certificates. Among these you might find an mythological male figure reclining on one elbow, surrounded by charts and a globe; a train engine with a tall sailing ship visible in the background; a a paddle-wheeled steamer; a sailor waving a Rebel flag and resting a bale of cotton; and CSA president himself president Jefferson Davis esconced in a tableau of flags and cannon.

If you also decide to frame one of these bond certificates and display it, maybe on a study or office wall, you will enjoy gazing at it and studying it for its arresting, antique appearance. If you’re like me,, you will undoubtedly start musing over what it would have been like to be alive during that momentous age and during those particular exciting yet tragic years.

Southern citizens were not the only purchasers of the Confederate bonds. Some persons across the sea in England, and also as other parts of Europe, did too. Could be they were folks whose sympathies in the Civil War lay with the South and its cause. Or quite possibly they were simply placing a “bet” on the war’s final outcome.

Buying and selling Confederate bonds has become a significant activity within the hobby of scripophily, which refers to the collecting of old financial instruments (including stock certificates, bank notes and railroad bonds, for example) for their historical and artistic value.

If you wish to delve into this subject further, you can find books, as well as information on the Web pertaining to Confederate bonds. You should learn more about their history and then attend coin shows where dealers often have them for sale.
