Anaid is right, it was Kandinski who was the first to present a painting without a subject. The way this happened was more or less by accident. He came home one day from a sketching trip and noticed one of his previously painted pieces at the top of a flight of stairs in very poor light and he did not recognize it. However, he realized that ever without knowing what the painting was about he still found the shapes and colors beautiful in their own right. This was the birth of abstract art.
