Shipping Containers: Your Private Self-Storage Solution
I am not a pack-rat.
Or at least I did not THINK I was a pack-rat.
That’s till my family and I decided to move out of the home where we lived the previous 6 years.
There are 4 of us total – myself, my husband and two young boys. Between us, we shared a five bedroom home, but wanted to move into a three bedroom place across town.
Surveying all of our belongings ahead, I didn’t understand precisely how much stuff we had gathered over time. There were boxes of children ‘ play toys that were sitting in our rumpus, racks of clothes we hadn’t worn in years, fishing gear that was getting dusty in the attic, and lots more things that we had nearly forgotten about.
While one piece of my conscious was exclaiming to just get shot of it all and drop it off at the next donation box, I just couldn’t do it.
Sure, there were some things that we hadn’t used in a few years, but there’s always a chance that we will need it in the future. Besides, we continue to had to decide out what to do with the items we definitely wanted to keep – memories like old photographs, the vintage furniture my parents gave us and the kid’s artwork.
One day while I was chatting to a friend, she recommended I research getting one of those self-storage shipping boxcars. Bingo! It was perfect!
So I called up the closest shipping container hire company and found out just how easy it was. I did not realise it at first, but they’ll bring the container to your house and transport it to their storage location. All I had to do was put all my effects into the container and they took care of the rest. It was great not being forced to fret about loading a van and driving it myself. It was one more less thing on the moving “to-do” list.
We didn’t have to get rid of our things just because we didn’t have space in our new home. Also, there had been so much room in there that we actually had space left over.
In reality my husband is considering purchasing a motorbike and storing it in our container. The boxcars are strong and safe, so he won't have to worry about anyone messing with his new toy or it getting damaged by the weather.
So I admit, I would be a bit of a pack-rat. I might keep things for many years. I could have things I do not really use each and every day.
But hey, don’t we all have a touch of a pack-rat in us?
At least now I have found a solution!
