Homeowners would enjoy it if a wooden house did not require much more than basic home maintenance. Only caulk and scrape some, toss down a drop cloth or two, and roll on some layers of durable house paint.
It is never that easy. Rather than easy, you usually have to fix the wooden surface of your house.
My roughly twenty-five year old home required quite a bit of work. The galvanized metal under my shingles was badly done and enabled the water to penetrate the overhang board. As the house aged, the house’s wooden surface here shriveled and caved in the painted surface.
I was determined to fix this myself. I was worried whether standard compounds to fill wood would do the job.
My next door neighbor patched his wood facing boards often fighting termite infestations. These jobs looked good years later. I asked him his secret.

Bondo was great for car dents. This auto filler was heavy and durable. It could be sanded. When he brought up using this auto filler, I realized quickly that repairs done this way would work.
When making repairs, the trick is to fill in the large holes in steps with thick layers at the outset and thinner sections to finish. You can even do fine finishing work, with ordinary kitchen wax paper and wood to shape. To sand before priming and painting all you need to do is to use one of the power sanders to make the Bondo blend smoothly with the wood.
If you have an old wood deck, you could also use Bondo to fix splits in the surface of your wood deck. It is useful, when you are refinishing redwood decks.
You should note that Bondo has a distinctive light reddish color and this will be obvious, if you only use a transparent water proofing on your wood deck. When you desire to seal a wooden deck after patching with Bondo, you might need to use an opaque sealant.
Note that it is not necessary to go to an auto parts store to get Bondo. It is easy to find Bondo at Home Depot or Lowes. Incidentally, my wood repair shows no signs of deterioration after many years.
