Solar Cookers Work Well For Desert Cooking
Don’t read this article on desert recipes expecting to get ideas for sweet after dinner treats. And that doesn’t mean healthy alternatives to after dinner snacks either. It’s easy to get a little mixed up. Dessert takes place after dinner, while a. desert is usually in the sand. Let’s talk about cooking in the desert.
A desert is practically ready-made for food preparation because of one important element. That element is the sun. A typical desert day can be as hot as the hundred 150° or more, which tells us what a great source of heat the sun truly is. If harnassed, it can mean cooking without modern appliances like microwaves, stoves or even gas or charcoal grills.
There are expensive solar cookers as well as homemade ones. The temperature in such cookers can reach near 300F, which is fine for cooking almost anything that can be found in desert recipes. Hotdogs, steaks, soups, even spaghetti can be cooked here. There are two issues to consider. This is slow cooking. That’s many hours needed to cook. It takes constant realignment of the solar cooker to keep the sun focused. Also don’t expect to cook this way on a cloudy day or at night.
But solar cooking has advantages that make desert recipes a tasty treat. Slow cooking keeps food moist. And it really isn’t possible to burn anything because there are hours of leeway in cooking times rather than minutes or even seconds with other cooking methods. Need proof? Try leaving some French fries in hot oil for an extra 10 seconds after they’re cooked. Also longer meal preparation time means more time to look forward to that great meal. Cooking isn’t just cooking and eating, it’s presentation and experience too. And don’t worry about food not browning in a solar cooker. If there’s some fat, the meat will brown.
