Expressionist Oil
Pencil-thin lines of oil paint?
That’s what I want to be able to produce. Does anyone know how to do it?
Charles Seliger, the New York abstract expressionist painter who died last year, is said to have done this using diluted oil paint in a technical pen, but I can’t imagine how. When I took a drafting course some years ago, what I remember is how difficult it was to keep the technical pens flowing even when they were filled with the ink they were designed for and that was designed for them!
Fine lines are facilitated by painting into a couch of medium. What this involves is gently rubbing in a layer of thinned oil where you intend to paint. Then taking a fine brush loaded with paint, stroke a line. Lines can be easily made by using a Flat or Bright sable brush rather than a fine Round. Glide the brush in the same manner as an ice skate along the edge. Do not flip the brush so the stroke is wide which would be like scraping the ice skate sideways. You can achieve a very fine line this way. It helps to use a mahl stick or anything like a mahl stick to support your hand. People use another brush or even support their painting hand with the other hand. I have an aluminum walking cane fr larger work and use a 2nd brush for smaller work.
In painting, broken inconsistent lines are more interesting. This suggests lines that have form and are struck by dappled light. Leave something for the imagination to fill in. Do not spell everything out. Leave room for atmosphere, form and space.
