Eagle crested mirrors does anyone know the symbolism?
Hi I am studying mirror framing history and keep coming across the circular gilt mirrors from the Regency period with eagles on the top does anyone know the symbolism of these!? Many thanks
The eagle was a Napoleonic emblem, characteristic of the Empire design period which ran in France concurrently to the Regency period in England. The eagle was representative of Napoleon’s strength as a warrior and soldier – it’s a emblem that was adopted in furnishing, alongside other emblems such as the bee, sphinx, laurel wreaths and furniture styles such as sabre-legs.
