Clicker Training for 11 week old Great Dane?
My female Great Dane is 11 weeks old–when will she understand the clicker. Right now she is so preoccupied with everything around her.
Of course she is, the world is exciting.
Try starting in a small, quiet room, no tv or radio etc. Let her get used to the room for a few mintues and then charge up your clicker. Until you charge up the clicker its just another noise.
Charging the clicker goes like this, Click-give treat; Click-give treat; Click-give treat; Click-give treat; Click-give treat; Click-give treat; Click-give treat. When you think she is starting to figure out that the sound of the clicker means she’s getting a treat, click then pause for a second and see if she starts looking for her treat. If she does then she’s associated the clicker with a treat and you’re ready to go.
You may to start each session by charging up the clicker for minute or two until she fully catches on.
Then start using the clicker to mark behavior you want. Once she is getting good in the room, move to another room, one with a distraction or two. Start by charging up the clicker, and basically start from square one with everything she knows in the other room. She’ll catch on much quicker this time. When she’s good there try another room, then another, and finally outside where you can add numerous distractions.
Each time you go to a new location start from the beginning. You’ll find that each time you change locations and start over that she’s catches much faster each time.
