How do I start a charity by selling handmade bracelets?
My best friend and I want to make bracelets that we can sell and give the money to the humane society or an organization that helps stop cruelty to animals. We want to have a little bracelet stand at the plaza, or in front of Wal-mart, or something like that.
Our parents told us you have to have a permit to sell things in public places. How do we go about getting one?
Also- any ideas on how to get our name out there? We really want to help make a difference in our community and animals’ lives.

You don’t need or want to start a new charity – you want to donate money you collect from selling bracelets to an established charity, like the human society or the ASPCA. What you need to do first is to GET PERMISSION from the organization that you will be fundraising for (so you have to pick one and stick with it). You want to talk to the Fundraising department. They will also be able to give you good advice, handout materials and other assistance, as well as making sure you are doing everything ‘above board’. You shouldn’t use the name of any charity without their knowledge and consent to do so. And doing charity work for an established organization will also help you when you talk to the store manager at Wal-Mart and ask for permission to use their grounds to sell your bracelets. (Tell your parents Wal-Mart is not public space, it is a private enterprise). If you do want to sell the bracelets literally on the street (sidewalks) then you would need a permit.
