what happens when you swim in water that was chemically treated?

my kids stepped into a lake by our house and got quickly out once I saw a sign that said this lake was chemically treated. I’m not sure of the dates on the sign as the person who wrote it wrote illegibly. I got my kids home at once and gave them all baths. Are they safe? I’m assuming if it was more of a threat they would have put a warning or block it, instead of a small sign.

Call you local DNR and ask what it was treated with and all the info you want to know.
