Christmas Cards Through History
The formality of delivering Christmas cards originated in 1843 with Sir Henry Cole of England.
As the story goes, Sir Henry Cole had too many customers to hand compose Christmas tidings to, so, he hired artist John Calcott Horsley to produce a card onto which he had typeset “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You”. Sir Henry had one thousand cards typeset that year. Of those, twelve remain today. The practice of sending Christmas cards caught on and soon, became a Christmas tradition.
In the late 1800′s and early 1900′s, Kate Greenaway, a successful childrens author, created some of the most well-known Christmas cards. Her cards featured satin, silk, and fringe. Some were even elaborate pop-ups featuring skaters and tiny mangers.
In the United States, Christmas cards were not common until 1875 when a German immigrant, Louis Prang began producing them. BeforeUntil that year, Christmas cards were brought into the country from England.Sadly for Prang, less expensive cards were introduced from abroad in the 1890′s, which forced him out of business. Still, Prang is known as the patriarch of the American Christmas card.
Card publishers competed fiercely amongst themselves during World War I and drove many technical advancements in card production.
Color lithography, first was used during the Great Depression, revamped the card industry.
A major change in greeting cards in the 1950′s was the introduction of staple cards. These cards, for the first time, used humor as an element.
With the introduction of e-mail in the 1990′s, electronic cards or ‘e-cards’ became widely popular.
In present day, there are a wide range of Christmas cards available. From traditional scenes and religious Christmas cards to jokes, there is a card out there to put anyone in the holiday spirit. In fact, the industry has evolved so much that there is a card for virtually any event, or “non-event.” Still, Christmas remains the highest ranking of the card-selling holidays.
For some people, Christmas cards are a way to keep in touch in an otherwise hectic life; a way to say, “Hi, I’m still here!” They are always evolving; from e-cards to written letters chronicling the year, to picture postcards, the warm sentiment is always there: Merry Christmas!
