Small Fish Oil – Discover What to Look For to Avoid Mercury Pollution
If you are looking for small fish oil, you have probably heard about the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, but you are also aware of the threat of mercury. In a recent study, researchers found mercury in all of the streams and lakes tested, as well as the fishes that swim in them, large and small. So, what do you do?
We are told to limit our consumption of large species, such as tuna and King Mackerel, because the toxic heavy metal builds up in their tissues, as they live longer lives and eat smaller species. So, we assume that eating small species would be safer and taking oils derived from them would be safer, too. But, that might not be true. It all depends on how much mercury the species is exposed to, regardless of its size.
For many years, the problem of mercury pollution in our oceans has been well-known. The amount present in streams and lakes throughout the US was a newer finding. It makes sense when you think about it, because the mercury pollution is primarily caused by coal-powered electric plants, and those plants are everywhere.
But if small fish oil is not necessarily safe, then what is? The only way to be sure about what you are getting is to buy from a manufacturer that posts a copy of an independent laboratory analysis on their website.
Typically called a COA or certificate of analysis, the document will list the amount of mercury and other toxins that are present, as well as the amount of oxidation that occurred before the oils were encapsulated. Oxidation is a problem that is totally unrelated to the size of the species; it has to do with the handling of the catch.
If small fish oil has high levels of oxidation, it indicates that spoilage has occurred. Consuming the oils will cause fishy tasting burps and will increase the body’s free radical burden. Free radicals are the cause of oxidation, as well as cellular aging in the human body.
Another thing that will be listed on the COA is the total amount of omega-3s that are present in the oils, as well as the content of specific omega-3s, like Docosahexaenoic acid and Eicosapentaenoic acid. Typically listed as DHA and EPA, they are the nutrients that are not present in other foods…the primary reason that supplementation is recommended.
Small fish oil is typically high in EPA and low in DHA, unless the species swims in very cold water. For example, the New Zealand Hoki fish has a long strip of fat running through each filet. The fat is rich in DHA.
DHA is essential to the formation and continued good health of the brain. It also has a greater effect on the level of total triglycerides in the bloodstream. High triglycerides are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
So, instead of limiting your search to small fish oil, look for a company that provides a COA. You’ll get the information that you really need.
