How do you critique a painting?
Is there a short list of rules that you’re suppose to follow when critiquing an artist’s painting? Woud you use specific descriptive words that are well known in the art culture? Some simple hints to get me started, since I have to critique 5 paintings for a grade would be so very helpful. All of you out there have so many wonderful ideas and opinions!!!
When I critique a painting I begin with looking at it. I ask myself many questions, if the artist is there I ask them questions about their intent, then I can inform them about the effectiveness of their execution in relation to what they wanted. I don’t start with something like “it’s good” or bad or even whether I like it or not, that stuff doesn’t matter in a critique, unless someone is asking specifically. <-- (strictly opinion) What is the subject, if its a representational painting? Is the concept clear? How is the paint handled? Do the symbols reference other cultural sensibilities? How does this painting make you feel? How does the composition (or lack of) make you feel? Why? Why? Why? Do the colors work well together? If they don't , in your opinion, how does that affect your perception of the piece/concept. Most people give short answers like "I like it because the composition is well balanced." or "those colors really work well together." or even more insulting "that's a nice painting, have you ever heard of ...(insert artists name)>? Basically challenge yourself to confront the work the language you use should be your own as well as the opinions. If your thoughtful and honest you’ve done a great service. Oh yeah… try to have fun.
