Impressionist Art Essay…?
“Impressionist painters often depicted scenes of contemporary middle class Parisian life. Explain the artists interests in the subject matter and the techniques they developed to represent these interests. In your response refer to at least two works by……”
Okay. First of all, if someone can explain to me exactly what I’m meant to be writing about it would be a great start.
This essay is for part of a major assignment.
I’m just wondering if anyone has some contributory ideas as to the essay on the “painters of modern life”. I have some loose framework drafts starting to be written up, but i’m not sure what to focus on.
Any help will be greatfully appreciated.
You can look at the times when the Impressionists were painting (Late 19th & Early 20th century) and see that there was an industrial revolution when machines were beginning to do a lot of the work that manual labour had previously done. That meant more leisure time for the masses , for the ordinary folks. You do see a lot of the Impressionists depicting scenes of leisure time like Saurat’s “Sunday Afternoon at the Grande Jatte” or Renoir’s “Le Moulin de la Galette”.
But to finish your essay with a flourish so as to ensure that A+ you should mention that the subject matter is only a small part of the Impressionists’ contribution to art history. Their greatest contribution of course was the style , the looseness, the airyness with which they
came to be known and for which the movement is famous.
