Oil Acrylic
Is this a structurally safe painting: acrylic gesso > alkyd toned canvas > alkyd block-in > oil painting.
I am concerned because I am using three types of paint in one painting (acrylic, alkyd, oil). For example, I know it is not advisable to use acrylics on top of oils. Not sure if there are any other rules like this.
Acrylics cannot ever be used over oils or alkyds.
Alkyds should not be used over traditional oils because of their rapid drying time – this can cause cracking. Even if oil paint appears dry to the touch, it can take weeks or even months to cure to the point where you can apply either alkyd or varnish.
Fat over Lean rule – use the fastest drying layer on the bottom ie: a light acrylic wash, an alkyd or thinned alkyd base, or oils diluted greatly with turpentine not oil.
Middle layer – straight alkyd over acrylic, straight alkyd over alkyd, or oil over alkyd
Top layer – Oil-rich (fat) layer – oil mixed with linseed
