pocomania (or jamaican voodoo) have anything to do with poke’mon? japanese for little monsters (demons) ??
orig q by another user about voodoo, answer was per chickay in columbian encyclopedia, excerpt(?) said ‘Similar observances are found in Jamaica, under the name pocomania,’ so hence my question…
No. The term “Pokemon” does not come from Japanese folklore, it’s a brand name invented by combining the English words “Pocket” and “Monster”. A demon in Japanese would be called an “oni”.
“Pocomania” derives from the Spanish “poco”, meaning little. So the literal meaning of the word is something like “small madness”. However, the modern term “pocomania” may be a corruption of an earlier African word that is now forgotten.
