Tips to Get Started Scrapbooking with Kids
Have you gotten your kids involved in scrapbooking? There seems to be a multitude of moms who do scrapbooking. I wonder if all those croppin’ moms ever tried scrapbooking with their children? It’s difficult to get kids to sit still for a group activity – especially when you are competeing with television and video games! It’s so important to provide a time for them to learn something creative – once kids get started painting, drawing or scrapbooking they usually love it.
If you’ve never tried scrapbooking with your kids, here are some tips.
Get the basic scrapbook supplies needed for the activity (paper, glue, scissors, albums or binders). There are lots of themed scrapbook albums for kids. You could find an album for each child (there are sports scrapbook albums, Disney scrapbook albums, and scrapbook kits for kids have similar themes to use for ideas. If you want to make one large family album, have everyone share ideas as a group and give each child their own page to personalize. Also, there are smaller albums – sometimes called mini-scrapbooks that you might find are fun to use in a shorter activity time period.
Some parents prefer to make specific supplies available for a kid’s scrapbook activity. Depending upon the ages of the children involved, you might limit their use of your specialty papers or more expensive scrapbooking materials. Other parents just let them use any of the supplies they have available. You know your own kids and what would be best for your scrapbooking activity time.
Children’s Scrapbooking Activity Time Tips:
Tip 1: Have Fun
Make it an easy going fun time. Being creative isn’t about being perfect or being a great artist – it’s something to experience and experiment with. Have the kids come up with ideas so they can develop their creative abilities.
Tip 2: Scrapbooking Tools and Materials
Depending on the children’s ages, you may want to be sure that your tools (such as scissors) are the child safety scissors and remove any other sharp materials (such as exacto knives) from within their reach. When using any tools that could be dangerous or have anything sharp on them, show them how to use them properly or tell them that only you will be using those.
Tip 3: Get Organized before You Start
Sort out your supplies in advance. Keep photo corners, pens, stickers, paper, glue and other materials easy to use by sorting them in storage containers or trays.
Tip 4: Photos for the Scrapbook
Have some photos selected and ready to use. You may want to use extra prints of photographs so the ones you are planning on using yourself won’t be used.
Tip 5: Stickers, Rub-ons and Embellishments
Demonstrate and explain how you use your stickers, rubber stamps, rub ons and other scrapbooking materials. Scrapbook kits could be purchased in advance to help with more ideas and supplies for scrapbooks with themes, such as pets, hobbies, boy’s or girls scrapbook themes.
Tip 6: Writing and Journaling
Show the kids how to write their own notes or captions (introduce them to journaling). Having some colorful pens to use can make this even more fun. Kids who like to draw can add their own drawings to the scrapbook layout. Have them add personal details about themselves (their age, the date, and their name) on a page. When they look at the scrapbook in later years, knowing what they did at different ages will become of more interest to them.
Tip 7: Set Some Activity Time Rules
Keep drinks and food away from your activity area. You don’t want greasy fingers or spilled drinks to ruin any of your scrapbooking paper and supplies.
If you have teenagers who love computers, think about having them learn about digital scrapbooking – they may like computer scrapbooking as much or more than playing those video games!
Spending this quality time is a great way to bond with your kids and help them learn how much fun it is to be creative. You never know – your kids may decide scrapbooking is their favorite hobby!
