What is involved in stretching an oil painting on canvas?
I purchased an oil painting that is painted on canvas. I know it needs wooden framework on the back, but do I need special tools to stretch it over the framework? How do I know when it is properly stretched? I don’t want it to start sagging later on.
For re-stretching a painting, especially if it’s older, I’d take it to a framing shop at least for advice if not to have them do it. It’s possible they might suggest placing it on top of museum quality board for support and back structure and not pulling or stretching it at all. Probably a good idea not to bend it or roll it as this may crack the paint.
Another idea, if it is a common size you can find, get a pre-stetched new canvas to place it on top of…support and structure for it.
Otherwise, you can buy stretcher bars the proper size and just lay the painting face down flat on a clean sheet on carpet…then center it properly…begin by tacking on side in the middle and then gently pulling on the other side and tacking…using a stapler so you can remove it if you need to redo it…then the other opposite sides in the middle and turning it moving from the centers toward the corners step by step….and for the corners there may already be folds in the canvas from the way it was stretched before…take time to try to fold it the way it was before and staple it down…then there you have it….take your time so you don’t have to take it apart to tighten it more….stretcher bars come with little wooden wedges to push into the inside corners of the bars to tighten it up as needed…so later if it seems a little looser you can just gently tap in the wedges to stretch the canvas a little more…gently so as never to rip or tear anything.
