Her brush has traveled to Europe, the United States, and Africa where her husband used to head the African operation for an American cosmetics firm. Although she has a studio and also has access to her twin sister’s studio in New York, she usually goes to the homes of her subjects and paints them there.
It would take three weeks for the artist to finish a portrait in a studio. In comparison, she can paint a portrait on location in five days. Wherever she paints is a contributor to how her painting would turn out in the end. There would be times when she actually has dinner with the subject to learn more about the kind of home and life the portrait would have. A famous actress has a biography with a cover where the artist’s portrait of the actress was used. Those whom the artist has already made portraits of include the members of the family who owns the five and dime fortune, the makers of fa mouse tomato ketchup of 57 varieties fame, the maker of tire and rubber, and the makes of that famous line of greeting cards. A Dominican monk and a tribal chief have also made it to her list of recorded portraits. When her portraits spread around the world, she became so famous she didn’t expect commissions coming from certain people.
She creates this flattering effect on the portraits of her subjects. Some form of deal is made between subject and artist regarding the use of costumes. She agrees to the wishes of those who want to wear hunting pinks, university robes, or their favorite clothing. A sweater and a skirt would be an example of an informal dress, which is her costume preference. She offers ideas for makeup and wants day old hairdos.
While she is painting, she often converses with her subjects. She gets their lips moving so that she can get the appearance of a smile. Feelings of boredom are obviously seen in a portrait. Decisions regarding the outcome of their portrait, such as the pose and how much of the person will be painted on canvas, is made after clients study a book of photographs that display the artist’s work.
Also popular are sketches made with ink, oil, and tempera in sepia tones. When she sketches, she sometimes makes a lot of sketches of the person on just one canvas, but puts the most detailed sketch in the foreground. The result resembles a page from a sketch book. Her career started some 20 years ago during a show she had in New York with her sister, and the gallery owner wanted to hang a self portrait that the artist had made. It was the attraction of the show that was most memorable.
