3 Painting Ideas For Your Home
A homeowner can choose from a variety of painting techniques to do on the walls to add quick style to a room. You can easily make a DIY paint job look professional with certain painting techniques.
You need to make sure that you are well prepared before you start any type of painting on your walls. What this means is that all your supplies are ready, you’ve prepped your walls by filling in any cracks or holes, and you have taped off trim and windows with blue painter’s tape. Some special tools will be needed to accomplish the certain painting technique, so make sure that you get those as well.
Rag Painting Technique
No paint brushes or rollers are used in the rag painting technique. Instead, any type of cotton rag or a plain old t-shirt can be used to apply paint to the wall. This will create a marbled effect on the wall. For rag painting:
Douse the rag in paint, making sure to shake off the excess.
The rag should then be dabbed onto the wall, applying paint in any pattern you want: however, make sure that you don’t spread the pattern too much.
A more creative touch can be added by applying a darker base color and then ragging on a lighter color of paint.
Sponge Painting Technique
A good technique used for giving walls interest and depth is sponge painting or sponging. Before you can sponge paint, you will need to apply a base color to the wall. In order to sponge paint:
Take a regular sponge or sea sponge and immerse it into any paint or glaze of your choice.
Begin on the outside of one of the walls and dab your sponge in a random manner.
You can choose to complete all the walls in this manner or choose to do only one if you want.
Color Washing Technique
The color washing technique adds a subtle finish to the walls that will give the appearance of floating color. This technique is great for anyone with walls that have many flaws that you want to hide. Since you need to build up layers for the full effect this technique can take longer than others. To do color washing:
Choose a base color for your wall, paint the wall in that color and wait for it to dry.
Then you will need to paint another layer with another color that is either slightly different or complimentary to the base.
This layer of paint should only be done with a paint brush, applying the paint in all different directions, going back over previous strokes so that the base color shows in random areas.
If you want another color to show on the walls as well you can do more than one layer of painting this way.
From a kitchen to a bedroom, these painting techniques can be used in any room. Not only are they a great way to add style to the walls, but they will also help liven up the room.
