What is the best brand of high-quality pastel for portraits?

Wow!
Great question. But now I must ask. Before discussing Brand what “type” of pastels were you considered using:

☻Soft Pastels
☻Oil Pastels
☻Pastel Pencils
☻Water Soluble Pastels

I use Soft pastels for portrait and Oil pastels for Landscapes.
I don’t use them but the best are Sennelier Artist Giant Oil Pastel. Created in the 1940′s in collaboration with Picasso these creamy, lipstick-like pastels are rich in pigment, cover well, and have outstanding opacity and lightfastness.

OILS

I use Holbein Artists’ Quality Oil Pastels.
Endorsed by the Oil Pastel Association of America (OPA), the Holbein Artist Quality Oil Pastel is without equal world-wide. Because of the wax content highly refined mineral oil, they will never harden completely.

I used to use Cray-Pas Specialist Oil Pastel. This version of Cray-Pas is not the student grade. It’s not called the “Specialist” for nothing.

SOFT PASTELS

These are truly the best. They resist cracking, having plenty of color selections and are rich in color from the moment they hit the paper
