Using GIMP, how can I merge the background of an image with a stock image WITHOUT deleting the original?
Image one is a group portrait in front of a beautiful sunset. Image two is a stock image of birds in flight. I’d like to ADD the birds to the sunset, but all of the searching I’ve done for an answer results in me having to delete my original background. I don’t want to do that, I just want to merge the bird image in with my sunset.

You would probably have to delete the background the birds are on.
Image 1 goes on the bottom layer, Image 2 goes on the layer above. If image 2 has a background you will need to delete it, or at least parts of it, otherwise you will merge the backgrounds as well, and if there are people in the shot, the merged part of the background of the upper image will go over their faces. It won’t look good.
If the background is just plain white in the birds image, you could get away with changing the layer mode in the layers dialog to multiply. If part of the background is still showing just use the eraser to delete it.
