beach umbrella size for the number of people?

I am going on vacation to the Carolinas with my friends in June. There are ten of us, and I’m not sure if any of them have beach umbrellas. Should I buy a 6.5 foot one, or spring for the 8 footer? The big one is only $4 extra, but would it be too big? How many people can you fit under each size? I probably won’t use it again for another 3-5 years after this.
