For more than once, the beauty of Shenandoah Valley has been put by a female Route 1 Bridgewater resident on painting. She has painted for 36 years now, and the reason for her carrying easel and oils to mountain ridges and cornfields isn’t just to paint nature itself. According to her, she can put back the color in an old fashioned way, which is black and white. She added that she often clips photos of an object or animal that she wants to use in a larger scenic painting. The artist holds up a used-newspaper photo clipping with two millstones to illustrate how she actually painted the large mural found on her family room. In the photo, grey mill wheels blend perfectly with the rustic millhouse by the riverbank.
According to her, the large mural on her wall is a product of her methods, which include using the said photographs to add detail to other works like weather board buildings and wood land animals. For this, she only uses water. Water, however, is easy to use for painting because it dries out fast.
She displayed another newspaper photograph of a snow scene and said she plans to begin a painting from it very soon. Snow is another thing that goes fast and is easy to do. The mural and one or two more other smaller scenes are the only paintings the artist has in her home. Quite obviously all her works go straight into the market, or given away to friends. Many a times her paintings are sold to customers of a furniture store in Maryland. When somebody, like a neighbor or a friend asks for her to paint, she does it willingly. The artist receives so many orders that she feels like she’s buried underneath them. But she gets even more when it’s the Christmas season.
She was only thirteen years old when first got into painting, thanks to a nice old lady in her neighborhood in Rockingham County. She would sit an entire afternoon for a lesson with the old lady, which is only as cheap as 25 cents. Her mother made her very first pallet from a lightweight board, using a drill and a paring knife and she still has it now. The old pallet maybe stained with paint all over, but a note telling how it was made is clearly seen.
Some six years ago, their church was brought down, but she was able to keep some of the keepsakes on the family room of their house. Near their house is a river, which you could easily see through the glass wall covering an entire face of the room. The artist said that because they wanted so much to bring the natural outdoors inside the house, they used the glass wall.
When she was painting the large mural, her mind was telling her something was missing. Because the children didn’t like the way the tithe painting shows fall’s bright foliage in reds, gold and rusts, she had to redo the painting three quarters through completion. She decided that she would not add anymore pictures to her home in order to let the people focus on the eye-catching mural on the wall, which tells everything about her love for painting.
