Michigan Oil Spill Threatening Kalamazoo River Superfund Site
In Michigan, a state of emergency has been declared because of the Michigan oil spill. An oil pipeline leaked and pumped almost 20,000 barrels of oil to the river, starting on Monday morning. The EPA and Enbridge Energy are working together to try and control the oil slick.
The Michigan oil leak
The reason for the oil pipeline leak isn’t yet known. The pipeline operator is estimating that there were 800,000 or more gallons of oil dumped into the river. The oil slick is quickly moving the 60 miles between the Kalamazoo River and Lake Michigan. Residents are already reporting heavy fumes and oil-coated wildlife along the waterways.
Enbridge Energy takes responsibility for Michigan oil leak
As outlined by spokespeople for Enbridge Energy, the company will “do all it can to minimize the spill’s impact on communities.” The 30-inch pipeline was used to carry crude oil from Griffith, Ind., to Sarnia, Ontario. Governor Jennifer Granholm, among others, has questioned dedication to the clean-up. Enbridge has estimated the spill was 819,000 gallons of oil – experts say it could be over 1 million gallons. Cleanup will likely cost several hundred million dollars.
Will the EPA come in to help clean up the Michigan oil leak?
The governor of Michigan has asked for the EPA to come in to help clean up the Kalamazoo River oil spill. There is a very severe concern, too, about the Kalamazoo River Superfund cleanup site. The polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs found in the superfund site could interact with the chemicals that evaporate off the oil. This could create fumes that are toxic to animals and individuals. The cleanup will probably see some involvement of the EPA, though if it will be financial or regulatory is not yet known for sure.
